Kevin Toney: Jazz Legacy
The complete title of this album is actually An Evening With Kevin Toney and Friends, as it was (mostly) recorded from a night at the North Cost Repertory Theater in Solano Beach California. Pianist Kevin Toney gives a recital of rich interpretations of standards with a clever and wondrous read of pieces like a dramatic “Lush Life”, an old school mixed with fluid read of “Squeeze Me” and a gospel tinged “Rejoice”. He also brings in some guests, such as vocalist Dominique Toney on a lovely, passionate and flexible “Lullaby Of Birdland” and a sassy “I Can’t Take That”. Soprano saxist Kamau Kenyatta makes it a threesome for a lovely and intuitive “Love Is On My Side”, while tenor saxist Azar Lawrence does a wild and dramatic duet of “In A Sentimental Mood”. Rich and controlled passions.

For those of us who are familiar with Kevin, and his playing, be it in a solo situation or all the folks he’s played with, it’s a return to something we've been missing. For those who aren't familiar with Kevin’s playing, they're in for a real treat! Clifford Brown Jr., American Jazz Countdown - San Francisco

It’s good to see Kevin Toney continuing to evolve, not content to rest on past laurels. He’s still putting in the work and releasing great music! Michael Valentine -WDNA – Miami
